The origin of the Americano.
I have heard – that when the Americans were in Italy during World War II – the American 1st Infantry Division was in Italy before they came to Swanage – they were not keen on the very strong small espressos that the Italians were familiar with – so they asked for hot water to be added – this was then called an ‘Americano’.
